On February 8 of this year, history was made and can I just say “vamos a celebrar.” Super Bowl LX hosted the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Seattle swept New England with a final score of 29 – 1, but as we all know by now,who the real star of the big show was. Enter Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio bka Bad Bunny who performed his entire set in spanish, paid heavy homage to his home of Puerto Rico and was magnetic with the beautiful imagery, the sensational dancers, the infectious energy and just the overall cultural themes.
Now you would think that with of all of this celebratory moving and shaking happening at such a monumental event, that the support by all AMERICANS would be lit, but if you know anything about the “MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN” gang, you know that wwhYte folks from the administration to Jake Paul have been outspoken critics of the NFL’s choice to have him perform. They said he is not an American, which is sad because a simple google search would’ve proven them wrong. Uhhhh, Puerto Rico is absolutely a US territory, but okay. They said he is un-American, which I assume by their definition means he is not blonde haired, blue eyed with a trad wife at home. They claim his lyrics and choreography were inappropriate, but the headliner of their alt right concert, Kid Rock has long been known for his lyrics that celebrate profanity, sexual references, drinking and drugs and my all time favorite; misogynistic declarations.
It’s a fact, not at all speculation that black and brown people built this country. Yet choosing these same people to celebrate their deep roots and cultural relevance on the biggest stage in THEIR country is a bad thing? WwhYte people are big mad at this historical masterpiece, yet the only culture that they can point to as being the America that they celebrate is country music.
Country music belongs to them, yet the first Cowboy in existence was a black man! Go figure.
The hypocrisy and the unfounded outrage should be considered comical at this point, yet the people in power become more powerful while the immigrants, no matter how talented, get death threats. This is only news because this AMERICAN singer is celebrated by his peers and wants to combat their hate with love. And to that I say Viva la resistencia!
